From the starting newel post to the last riser, Tim's Wood Shop builds every staircase component from solid hardwood. We offer a full range of parts — handrails, footrails, treads, balusters, newels, and more — in your choice of Poplar, Ash, or Red Oak.

What We Build
Staircase Components
We supply and build every part of your staircase — from structural treads and risers to decorative newels and balusters.
Handrail
2‑3/8″ × 2‑3/4″ profile. The primary gripping rail running the length of your staircase, available in all three species.
Footrail
1‑3/8″ × 3‑1/2″ profile. The lower rail that anchors balusters at the base of the balustrade system.
Starting Newel
The prominent post at the base of the staircase. Sets the visual tone for the entire balustrade and provides structural anchoring.
Landing Newel
Taller post used at landings and upper floors. Slightly larger profile than the starting newel for proper visual proportion.
Baluster
The vertical spindles between the handrail and footrail. Available in square or turned profiles to match your design style.
Half Post
Used at wall returns and intermediate points in the balustrade where a full newel is not required.
M.R. Tread
Mitered-return tread with a finished nosing on both the front and one side — ideal for open-sided staircases.
Square Tread
Standard square-cut tread for closed-stringer staircases. Clean, classic profile that pairs with any balustrade style.
Riser
The vertical face board between treads. Keeps the staircase looking clean and finished from every angle.
Skirtboard
The decorative board running along the wall beside the staircase. Sold by the linear foot to fit any stair length.
Fillet
1/2″ × 1‑3/4″ filler strip used between balusters in the footrail groove for a clean, finished appearance.

Choose Your Wood
All stair components are available in three hardwood species — each with its own character, grain, and price point.
Poplar
A smooth, fine-grained hardwood that takes paint exceptionally well. The most budget-friendly option and ideal for painted staircases where a flawless finish is the goal.
Ash
A strong, light-colored hardwood with a straight, open grain. Ash stains beautifully and offers excellent durability — a great choice for stained or natural-finish staircases.
Red Oak
The most popular hardwood in American homes. Red Oak's warm reddish-brown tones and prominent grain make it the classic choice for stained staircases that need to stand out.
